I love watching a forest recover from a prescribed burn. Almost overnight fresh vegetation arises from the blackened ground and soon the forest is more beautiful than before.

In my last post I discussed our family connection to the Emily Wilson camellia that graced us with beautiful flowers every spring during my childhood. This time I want to share with you another southern favorite, the Banana shrub (Magnolia figo).
Ever since I was a child I looked forward to the Spring flowering of the “Banana Shrub” and the “Emily Wilson” camellia. The “Emily Wilson” is has a very special place in my heart since it was named after my great aunt. She was born Emily Louise Cato and was the sister of my Grandfather William Leon Cato.
