Reasons to keep your COVID-19 mask

The CDC says fully vaccinated individuals can now go without face coverings in most situations. However, I think we should consider keeping them on, or at least keeping one in your pocket because there are quite a few non-COVID reasons to continue wearing masks.

Here are a few of the benefits of mask wearing:

  • Masks reduce the risk of flu, common colds, as well as other airborne diseases.
  • Limit pollen exposure that causes hay fever.
  • Reduce exposure to toxic fumes from certain vehicles, particularly garbage trucks.
  • As we return to being seen in public, masks cover up that you forgot to shave, put on your lipstick, or both!
  • Filter smoke from prescribed burns. (Smoke is a common issue here in Florida.)
  • Help protect from red tide vapors. (Another problem here in Florida.)
  • Protect your nose from sunburn. (Guess what? Another problem in the Sunshine State.)
  • Avoid the inhalation of sand flies AKA no-see-ums. (There are quite a few problems in Florida. Stay away!)

A very good way to test your mask is to wear it for a while in a smoky area.

Smoke particles are about 2.5 microns in diameter1 and a the COVID-19 virus is about 0.06 to 1.4 microns.

When you remove the mask you should immediately smell the difference. If not, your mask probably needs adjustment, has a leak, or needs to be be replaced.

Smoke particles are larger than the COVID-19 virus, so you have no “proof” your mask gives you full protection. However, if it fails the smoke test it certainly won’t offer much COVID protection.

Be careful out there!
